Biobanking working group

Biobanking infrastructure and framework

Biobanking is regarded as a key resource for modern molecular medical research – a working group in the TMF considers infrastructure and framework.

Biobanking has become an integral part of biomedical research. Given the new and developing possibilities for genetic analysis of various biomaterials, questions as to the legal and organizational framework for biobanking have taken on a new quality. The biobanking working group has set itself the task of ensuring legal certainty for researchers and enabling the long-term use of biobanks. To this end, a major project was launched at the end of 2004, the results of which are now available and are being successively presented to a wider audience in the TMF book series and at events.

For passing on to interested parties – operators of biobanking facilities and institutions that are planning to set up a biobank – the results will be presented in such a way that they assist and facilitate practical implementation. This includes, in particular, the quality criteria and standards for biobanking development and operation.

Setting up biobanks in network projects is becoming increasingly international. The working group has therefore begun to consider the issue from a European perspective.
