Press Briefing on the Research Data Portal for Health at the Symposium of the Medical Informatics Initiative

This year's Symposium of the Medical Informatics Initiative will take place on October 5th and 6th at the dbb forum Berlin.
On October 5th and 6th, 2022, the Symposium of the Medical Informatics Initiative (MII), funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, under the motto "Connecting. Researching. Healing. Assessment and Perspective" will take place in Berlin. We cordially invite you to participate in the MII Symposium and the press briefing.

At the MII Symposium, the German Research Data Portal for Health (FDPG) will be presented on October 5, 2022, at the dbb forum Berlin. As part of the MII, data integration centers have been established at university medical centers nationwide. These facilities prepare patient data and biosamples from routine care for medical research and provide them in a data protection-compliant manner for medical research purposes. The new portal lets researchers centrally request these data and biosamples for a research project. The portal also provides transparency about the use of patient data by publishing all approved research projects and their results in a project register. The FDPG is operated by the TMF – Technology and Methods Platform for Networked Medical Research/MII Coordination Office.
The FDPG will be presented at the symposium on October 5, 2022, in Session 2 from 12:20 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. with a live demonstration. This will be followed by the press briefing from 1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The following MII experts will be present:
- Sebastian C. Semler, Managing Director of the TMF/MII Coordination Office,
- Jens Bussmann, Secretary General of the Association of University Clinics in Germany (VUD), and
- Prof. Dr. Hans-Ulrich Prokosch, Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg.

Background
The Medical Informatics Initiative (MII) aims to digitally network routine patient care data nationwide and make it available for medical research to treat diseases faster and more effectively in the future. All institutions of university medicine in Germany are working together with other research institutions, companies, health insurance companies, and patient representatives in the four consortia DIFUTURE, HiGHmed, MIRACUM, and SMITH.
In the establishment and networking phase (2018-2022), the BMBF is funding the establishment of data integration centers at university clinics with over 200 million euros. From 2023 to 2026, cooperation between university medical center locations is to be expanded, and new partners added.
In addition, within the framework of the MII, the BMBF is funding six Digital Progress Hubs Health with around 50 million euros (2021-2025). Their task is to (initially in pilot projects) bring the pioneering work of the university clinics into other healthcare system areas, from outpatient care in practices to rehabilitation and follow-up care. To strengthen research and teaching in digital health, the BMBF also supports newly established professorships with 21 junior research groups, providing around 30 million euros for this purpose (2020-2026).
A coordination office is responsible for the national coordination of the MII, which is operated by the Technology and Methods Platform for Networked Medical Research (TMF) together with the Medical Faculty Association (MFT) and the Association of University Clinics in Germany (VUD) in Berlin.
