TMF Advisory Board holds inaugural meeting

The TMF Advisory Board has been reappointed with modified membership. Its inaugural meeting took place in Berlin on 21 February 2019. In particular, the board will focus on the usage of patient data for medical research and the German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), which is currently under development.
The Advisory Board comprises leading experts and representatives from various institutions, associations and organisations, as well as individual professionals whose work closely relates to TMF’s interdisciplinary activities. Each member contributes their unique expertise, advising the TMF Board of Directors on developments in the German health and research landscape, and offering suggestions for structural innovation and collaborative projects.
At the inaugural meeting, the board members discussed the opportunities opened up by electronic patient records for research and healthcare. They examined the requirements for a research-compatible data structure, and reviewed the next steps for coordinating intersectoral applications. In addition, the members debated ways to realise the potential of big data at the intersections of human medicine, veterinary medicine, the environment, and food. And where large volumes of data are involved, questions of data quality and analysis are becoming especially important.
The Advisory Board also turned its attention to the establishment of the German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). Germany aims to provide up to 90 million euros of funding annually between now and 2028 to establish and operate the NFDI; the German federal government is to provide 90 per cent of the funds, with the federal states supplying the remaining 10 per cent. Within the scope of the NFDI, data records that are currently often decentralised, project-based and temporary, are to become systematically available to the entire German scientific community.
The TMF Advisory Board is appointed for a period of two years. The current term will end in 2020.
