A lot of the data collected in the statutory health insurance system is of great value for the further development and improvement of healthcare. For example, the need for care services from other service providers can be analyzed using key figures derived from health insurance billing data. However, as personal data, social and health data are also subject to a tight legal framework under data protection law. Their use in other contexts, particularly in research, requires an in-depth understanding of the regulations at European and national levels.
This volume provides scientists and anyone else interested in using social and health data with an overview of the current legal framework. It also enables the healthcare industry and state institutions to develop solutions and products that improve the quality of care. This publication thus provides healthcare system stakeholders with important guidance on the legally compliant use of social and health data. The first part outlines the socio-legal framework for using social data for research. The second part provides an overview of the handling of research data following the application of the GDPR and corresponding national adaptations to the legal framework.
