Fresh Momentum for TELEMED

Germany's leading conference on health telematics and telemedicine is realigning itself: In addition to providing an annual overview of the current state of telemedicine, TELEMED will now focus on a specific theme each year.

In the future, the Professional Association for Medical Informatics (BVMI), the Telematics Platform for Medical Research Networks (TMF), and the German Society for Health Telematics (DGG) will jointly host TELEMED. Dr. Carl Dujat, President of BVMI, PD Dr. Günter Steyer, Chairman of DGG, and Sebastian C. Semler, Scientific Managing Director of the TMF, aim to further develop TELEMED in content and securing financial and organizational stability.

Together with Michael Engelhorn (Deputy Chairman of the BVMI Regional Representation Berlin-Brandenburg) and Dr. Stephan Schug (Managing Director of DGG), they will be responsible for the organization and strategic management of the conference.

In the professional program design of the conference, they will be supported by a program advisory board chaired by Prof. Dr. Britta Böckmann (FH Dortmund) and Prof. Dr. Thomas Tolxdorff (Charité Berlin). The program advisory board includes other leading experts from various disciplines. The board replaces the steering and program committees that have shaped and accompanied TELEMED over the past five years.

TELEMED, Germany's oldest eHealth annual conference, will now, following tradition, focus on a specific theme each year while also providing an annual overview of the current state of health telematics and telemedicine.

The next TELEMED will take place on October 1-2, 2009, in Berlin. Under the title "Telemedical Centers and Services—Is the Entry into Standard Care Approaching?", the conference will primarily address the conditions under which telemedical services can be included in health insurance companies' service catalogs, how to establish new telemedical services, and what framework conditions need to be considered.

Professional Association of Medical Informatics (BVMI)

The Professional Association of Medical Informatics (BVMI) is the professional representation of medical informaticians. The registered association based in Heidelberg was founded in 1983 and has over 600 ordinary, associated, student, and supporting members as well as honorary members. The BVMI represents individuals who are trained in medical informatics or permanently active in the field of medical informatics. The BVMI acts as a point of contact for its members on professional policy issues, takes care of the preservation, promotion, and representation of their professional policy concerns, and promotes further education in medical informatics. Over time, regional representations have formed, which fulfill the association's tasks in the regional area, particularly through local information and training events.

Telematics Platform for Medical Research Networks (TMF)

Conducting patient-oriented research at distributed sites, collecting data and materials, and documenting, evaluating, or disseminating them using IT poses challenges that are relatively new in biomedical research. There are often no solutions to these questions, sometimes not even legal regulations. To jointly identify and solve these organizational, legal-ethical, and technological problems, numerous research networks have joined forces in the TMF (Telematics Platform for Medical Research Networks).

As an umbrella organization, the TMF significantly contributes to improving the organization and infrastructure of medical research in networked structures. TMF members include supra-regional networks and networked institutions of medical research. These include, among others, the competence networks in medicine, networks for rare diseases, psychotherapy networks, zoonosis consortia, coordination centers for clinical studies, the National Genome Research Network (NGFN), institutes of the Fraunhofer Society, and, with the Cystic Fibrosis Institute, even a patient organization.

German Society for Health Telematics (DGG)

Since 1998, the German Society for Health Telematics (DGG) has been advocating the development and introduction of telematics applications in healthcare.

The DGG sees comprehensive networking as a crucial success factor for better quality and efficiency in healthcare. Health telematics provides the necessary infrastructure for new care models and adequate organizational forms for integrated health care.

DGG activities include active participation in models and strategies for the successful use of information and telecommunication technologies in medicine and healthcare, organizing events and participating in established conferences, forming an exchange forum on health telematics issues, reflecting on practical experiences in the planning, implementation, and use of health telematics applications against the background of architectural models, standards, interoperability, and legal framework conditions, as well as collaboration with European and international partner organizations.

The DGG is the responsible "National Member" of the International Society for Telemedicine and eHealth (ISfTeH) and, within the framework of a D-A-CH agreement, a cooperation partner of the Austrian Scientific Society for Telemedicine and eHealth (ASSTeH) and the Swiss Society for Telemedicine and eHealth (SGTMeH).
