Infectious pathogens that are transmitted from animals to humans and can cause so-called zoonoses are the subject of numerous research projects. Samples are taken from animals for scientific investigations in order to better understand, combat, and monitor these pathogens. This raises legal and data protection questions, which are addressed in this expert report. It was created on the initiative of the National Research Platform for Zoonoses and serves to provide researchers with legal certainty in the collection and processing of animal samples and the creation of research information and declarations of consent.
In order to sensitize researchers to the legal context in which they operate, the book explains in simple language which legal issues are involved in the scientifically relevant sampling scenarios and the further processing of accompanying sample data. The spectrum of topics ranges from the obligation to notify and report animal diseases to the rights of use and exploitation of the samples.
