Jena University Hospital can hold up to 500,000 serum, plasma and blood samples from patients with sepsis. What makes this new biobank, which is sponsored by the BMBF, so special is its integrated concept: the handling, sorting and release of samples is fully automated using robotic systems so that the samples are continuously kept at -80°C. "This is unique in a medium-sized biobank" explained the biobank manager and TMF board member Dr. Dr. Michael Kiehntopf during the visit of the TMF biobanking working group to Jena on June 15, 2010. As well as a visit to the biobank, the working group meeting, which was held in Jena, discussed in particular the stance taken by the German Ethics Council vis-à-vis biobanks, the published BMBF guidelines for the promotion of a national biobanking initiative, as well as the development of the German Biobank Registry.
