Third-Party Funded Project

SCAILED

The SCAILED project explores how health data can be made accessible and usable for AI-driven biotech innovation through the European Health Data Space.

Ongoing Project
Digitalisierung & E-Health
Kommunikation & Stakeholder Engagement

SCAILED (SCale-up Biotech AI Innovation by Leveraging Responsible Data Use under the European Health Data Space) aims to accelerate the development and deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital solutions in the European biotech sector by leveraging high-quality health data within the secure and interoperable framework of the European Health Data Space (EHDS).

The project addresses key challenges facing biotech innovators, including complex and constantly evolving regulatory requirements (such as the AI Act and the Medical Device Regulation), fragmented data governance from both a legal and technical perspective, and the resulting barriers to AI adoption, which are also attributable to insufficient collaboration among stakeholders. SCAILED directly addresses the EU4Health call and pursues a coordinated multi-stakeholder approach that brings together industry, research infrastructures, health authorities, patient organisations and AI Factories. Its aim is to foster responsible, scalable and sustainable innovation based on recently adopted and forthcoming legislation.

Objectives

  • Establish a multi-stakeholder platform and stakeholder forum to promote continuous dialogue, knowledge exchange and co-development across the biotech ecosystem.
  • Conduct comprehensive landscape analyses and case studies to identify barriers, best practices and actionable recommendations for integrating AI and health data infrastructures within the EHDS framework.
  • Pilot the networking and integration of health data infrastructures in genomics, cancer imaging and brain health within the EHDS, demonstrating harmonised governance and technical interoperability.
  • Select and implement practical use cases addressing patient care, diagnosis and treatment efficiency to validate the feasibility and impact of AI-powered solutions.
  • Translate project results into production-ready services through AI Factories, ensuring that outcomes move beyond pilot projects into practical application.
